FAQ

Questions?

We’ve got you covered! Here are the answers to some of our most commonly asked questions:

What are the coverage differences for each plan and why do they have different costs?

League offers three different health insurance plan offerings that allow you to make the best decision for you and your family. These three plans provide flexibility and allow you to choose what you need from your health insurance. Each plan offers different amounts of coverage, but each plan can be utilized to make the most of your coverage.

The Enhanced Plan offers the highest amount of medical and dental coverage with Manulife. This plan includes vision and paramedical coverage as well as enhanced mental health coverage. This plan also includes the highest levels of dental coverage. You will receive a smaller flex credit allocation with this plan.

The Balanced Plan offers a comprehensive level of medical and dental coverage with Manulife. If you select this plan, you are selecting a program with a higher level of coverage than Flexible and a lower level of coverage than Enhanced. You will also receive a high level of flex credit allocation with this plan that will help cover items not eligible under the Canada Life program.

The Flexible Plan offers the lowest level of medical and dental insurance with Manulife. However, if you select this program, you will receive the highest level of spending account amounts, allowing you the greatest amount of flexibility for your personal and health needs.

As you can see, each plan is different, just like you and your needs. There are many things to take into consideration when selecting a plan. If you have any questions about plan selection, reach out to help@league.com.

When can I change my plan elections outside of our enrollment time period?

The only time you can change your health insurance coverage is when you experience a Qualifying Life Event like getting married or adding a mini-me to your family! Note that our open enrollments will occur every two years (February 2024 for an effective date of March 1, 2024 followed by February 2026 for an effective date of March 1, 2025)

What is a Health Spending Account (HSA)?

A Health Spending Account is a benefit through League that provides reimbursement for a wide range of health-related expenses, over and above regular benefit plans. HSA’s are administered in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency guidelines. Money spent from this account is tax-exempt (except for provincial income tax in Quebec).

HSA amounts are allocated on a quarterly basis according to our policy year which runs March 1 – February 28th. Deposits occur on March 1st, June 1st, September 1st and December 1st.

Do my unused HSA and LSA dollars roll over to the next plan year? What about my Career Development Spending Account?

Any unused funds from your Lifestyle Spending Account (LSA), Fertility Spending, Adoption Spending and Transgender and Non-Binary Spending Accounts will roll over indefinitely. Your Healthcare Spending Account (HSA) funds are subject to expiry every 24 months. Unused funds from your Career Development Spending Account will expire at the end of each plan year.

How much do I pay for these plans and how much is covered by my company?

League covers 100% of your annual premiums for the medical and dental programs!

Long-Term Disability premiums continue to be employee paid and will automatically be taken off your bi-weekly paycheck. Note that you will not be able to see your Long-Term Disability premiums through the enrollment experience as they are a function of your salary (which we keep highly confidential!).

In addition, if you have selected optional coverage such as Optional Life or Critical Illness Insurance, the associated premium amounts will be deducted from your paycheck once the coverage is approved by Manulife. You will be able to see your Optional benefits payroll premiums through the enrollment experience so feel free to play around with the tool to get a sense of the coverage that best meets your individual needs and budget!

What is an out of pocket maximum?

The Balanced and Enhanced programs have an ‘out of pocket maximum’ for drug coverage. This coverage is there to protect you and your family from potentially catastrophic costs. Drug costs are covered at a level of 50% and 80% under these two programs until the out of pocket maximum is reached ($4,000 for Balanced and $1,000 for Enhanced). If and once you reach this level of cost, your coverage will automatically be reimbursed at a level of 100% for the remainder of the plan year.

Am I eligible?

To qualify for group coverage from League, you must be covered for benefits under a provincial health care or federal government plan that provides similar coverage.

Your League coverage is designed to cover your expenses over and above those covered by your provincial plan, provided they are deemed medically necessary.

Who are our insurance carriers?

League’s insurance programs are provided through Manulife. Your League wallet will link you to the Manulife website.

Do I need to make a selection?

We strongly encourage you to review the available programs and make an active selection! If you don’t go through the enrollment experience, you will automatically be enrolled into the default options.

What is the default plan if I don’t make selections?

The default program is the Balanced plan for medical and dental coverages as well as spending account allocations. In addition, 75% of your spending account allocation will default to your Health Spending Account (HSA) and the remaining 25% will default to your Lifestyle Spending Account (LSA).
