Long weekend family hike

Whether you celebrate July 1st or July 4th, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that the long weekend is right around the corner for Americans and Canadians and we’re on the lookout for inexpensive things to do.

Inexpensive? How about free? Yup, it’s possible to have an amazing weekend that won’t cost you a dime.

Keep reading for seven healthy long weekend activities that are actually free (seriously!)

1. Jump in the pool

Community swimming pools are typically open to the public at no cost, so google the one nearest you, grab your swimming geardon’t forget your sunscreen! – and head on over. It’s a great way to beat the heat and get a little bit of activity in while you’re at it.

2. Spend time in nature

Going for a walk in the park, heading out for a hike in the forest, or biking on your favorite trails is a great way to get moving and de-stress at the same time. The greener your surroundings, the better it is for your lungs and your mental wellbeing – so try to get as far away from the sights and sounds of the city as you can.

3. Go to the library

Remember long afternoons spent flipping through books at the library when you were a kid? If you’re looking for ways to keep cool during peak hours, try lounging around your local library for a bit. Turn technology off so that you can truly immerse yourself in a book, just like the good old days. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll end up taking a few home with you.

4. Pack a picnic and head to the park

Get out your checkered blanket and your old fashioned picnic basket – we’re off to Memory Lane! Just make sure to prepare some finger foods (and water to stay hydrated) before you go. A selection of sandwiches, and some easy-to-eat fruit and vegetables (like grapes or celery sticks) should do the trick.

Got a sweet tooth? Make some homemade cookies the night before and bring them along. To keep things healthy (and free), make sure you’ve brought everything from home.

5. Seek out fireworks, festivals, and free concerts

Put on your detective hat, and get googling. You’ll be surprised to learn how much free fun you can participate in this weekend, and during the summer months. From festivals that bring the entire town together, to long weekend fireworks, to free outdoor concerts, there are more options than you might think. Want to leave your wallet at home? All you need to do is pack some snacks, and you’re good to go (see #4).

6. Bring out the board games!

Enjoy a nostalgia-filled evening with games from your childhoodwe know you’ve got a bunch stored away somewhere. Keep some healthy snacks on hand, like unsalted popcorn, a fruit and veggie platter, or a bowl of nuts and dried fruit, in case one board game turns into a marathon. If you don’t have a huge selection of games to keep you entertained, a deck of cards should keep you going.

7. Bask in the beauty of your own backyard

Enjoy a staycation without even leaving your lawn. Lounge on the deck with a good book, listen to some of your favorite tunes while you work in the garden, take a nap in the shade, enjoy a game of volleyball, or host a heart-healthy BBQ! The possibilities are endless.

Here’s to a long weekend full of activities that are healthy, free and fun!
